Six concrete techniques that separate a convincing artificial arrangement from an obviously fake one — from stem angle to how much greenery you actually need.
Most artificial arrangements look artificial for one of two reasons: the flowers are all facing the same way, or there is no greenery underneath them. Neither problem is about the quality of the flowers — it is about how they are put together. These six adjustments fix it.
Real flowers do not grow at identical angles. When you place stems, deliberately turn some heads away from the viewer and tip others slightly downward, as though they are heavy. A bouquet where every bloom faces forward and level reads as manufactured within a second.
Use large focal blooms, medium flowers and small filler — and count them in odd numbers. Three large, five medium and seven small is a more convincing structure than an even split, because even numbers tend to pair up visually and create symmetry you did not intend.
The most common mistake is arranging greenery around the edge of a bouquet. Real arrangements have greenery below and slightly outside the flowers, so it reads as the base the flowers grew from. Place greenery first, then flowers into it.
A few stems falling over the rim of the vase make an arrangement look like it has weight and history. One or two trailing pieces is enough — more starts to look untidy rather than natural.
Every stem has an internal wire. Bend it. A perfectly straight stem is the single strongest signal that a flower is artificial. Curve the head slightly toward the light and give the stem a gentle arc.
In a glass vase, an arrangement where every stem ends at the same depth looks combed. Cut stems to slightly different lengths so the mass inside the vase looks like separate stems rather than one cut bundle.
Artificial flowers read as real from arm's length and do not survive macro photography. That is a fair trade for never watering them, never replacing them, and never coming home to drooping heads. Arrange for the distance people actually view from, and they will look right.
